There was no shortage of applause, proud smiles or emotional moments as Vivien Vanterpool Primary School celebrated the achievements of its students during its annual Rising Star Awards Ceremony, a celebration that served as a reminder that success is measured not only in grades, but also in determination, character and the people who help children thrive along the way.
Held recently ahead of the close of the academic year, the ceremony recognised 50 students for their academic performance and reading achievements, while also honouring teachers and members of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) whose commitment continues to shape the school’s success.
Welcoming parents, staff, invited guests and award recipients, Principal Estelle Laurent-Carter described the ceremony as far more than an awards presentation.
“This is more than just a celebration,” she said. “It is actually a tradition that celebrates hard work, perseverance and progress.”
She explained that students were recognised across several categories, including the Principal’s List for those earning A grades in all core subjects, the Deputy Principal’s List for students achieving an overall average of 80 per cent or higher, and, for the first time, the Teacher’s List, recognising students with overall averages between 70 and 79 per cent during the 2025-2026 academic year.
Reading achievement also featured prominently through Platinum, Golden and Silver Reader Awards, while kindergarten students were acknowledged for their positive attitude towards learning.
Laurent-Carter noted that the school’s vision extends well beyond academics.
“In keeping with our last year’s goal, this year’s students will also be recognised for holistic growth, celebrating not only academic success, but also positive behaviour, citizenship and much more. After all, success is not only measured by degrees, but also by character and contribution.”
The principal also paid tribute to parents and guardians, describing their encouragement as an essential part of every child’s journey.
“Your support, encouragement and involvement make all the difference,” she said, urging families to continue inspiring their children to believe in their potential and strive for excellence.
While the students were undoubtedly the stars of the morning, the ceremony also turned the spotlight on educators whose work often happens quietly behind classroom doors.
Teachers received awards including those in innovative teaching, student impact and outstanding dedication. The applause that followed spoke volumes.
Chairperson Sandra Liddie-Gumbs reflected on the significance of that response, describing it as a visible expression of appreciation from both students and parents.
“It is a community effort,” she said. “It is a school body. We’re not small. Although we’re small in size, we’re not small in class.”
That spirit of partnership was echoed by outgoing PTA President, Timarah Hodge, who reflected on six years of service after first being elected in October 2020. Looking back, she said the executive’s vision had always been clear: strengthening the school academically, improving sporting opportunities, increasing parental involvement and ensuring Vivien Vanterpool Primary could stand alongside any school around the world.
Among the initiatives she highlighted was the planned development of a multipurpose sporting facility, a project being pursued in partnership with the Department of Education.
She also reflected on the return of the Rising Star Awards in 2022, explaining that the ceremony was revived because every child deserves to know their efforts are seen and valued.
As she prepares to step down from the role, Hodge expressed gratitude to fellow executive members, teachers, staff, parents and community partners who helped transform ideas into lasting improvements for the school.
“None of what we have accomplished was the work of one person. It was truly a team effort,” she said.
Her final message was directed to the students whose achievements had brought everyone together. “Remember that your potential is limitless. Continue to work hard, dream big and never stop believing in yourself. We are incredibly proud of each and every one of you.”
For the students who walked across the stage to collect their certificates, the ceremony celebrated months of dedication. For parents, teachers and supporters, it was a reminder that behind every successful child stands an entire community committed to helping them rise, one shining star at a time.
