ANGUILLA SUMMER FESTIVAL OPENING CEREMONY LIGHTS UP THE CARNIVAL SEASON

There is something unmistakable about the first night of Summer Festival. Before the parades fill the streets, before the music takes over every corner of the island and before the friendly debates begin over who will claim this year’s crowns, there is a moment when Anguilla collectively pauses, looks ahead and embraces what the coming days will bring.
That feeling was unmistakable on Wednesday, 29th July, 2026, as the 52nd Anguilla Summer Festival officially opened at the Landsome Bowl Cultural Centre under the theme, “Carnival Constellation”.

From the opening moments, hosts Farrah Banks and Keri Rogers captured that spirit perfectly, describing the festival as a celebration that has united generations through music, culture, pageantry and the unmistakable spirit of the island. Their message set the tone for an evening that looked beyond entertainment to recognise the people whose dedication keeps the festival alive every year.
The Honourable Minister of Social Services Mrs. Shellya Rogers-Webster, described the festival as “the heartbeat of our nation,” reminding those gathered that it represents far more than a packed calendar of events. She spoke of a celebration rooted in Anguilla’s history, resilience, creativity and identity, while highlighting the role it continues to play in strengthening tourism, entrepreneurship and the island’s creative industries.
She also acknowledged the people working behind the scenes, from the Anguilla Festival Development Commission and Summer Festival Committee to sponsors, volunteers, emergency services and community partners, offering special recognition to Opening Night chair Melania Matthew for her commitment in bringing the launch together. Looking ahead, Minister Rogers-Webster reaffirmed her commitment to preserving Anguilla’s cultural heritage while ensuring future generations continue to benefit from it.
Before delivering his address, Romare Kelsick, Chairman of the Anguilla Festival Development Commission, invited the audience to observe a moment of silence in memory of Leroy ‘Bro. Lee’ Richardson, recognised for his longstanding contributions to music and calypso, and Evelyn Thomas, remembered by generations as a familiar and beloved vendor at the Landsome Bowl Cultural Centre.
Kelsick went on to describe the Summer Festival as the flagship expression of the Commission’s mission to preserve, promote and develop Anguilla’s cultural traditions. He noted that this year’s tagline, “Anguilla for Summer,” is more than a promotional phrase. Rather, it is an invitation to the world and a reminder to Anguillians themselves that when summer arrives, the island becomes a stage where culture, music, culinary traditions, boat racing, pageantry and community come together in a uniquely Anguillian experience.
While the celebration focused on excitement, Acting Commissioner of Police Haslyn Patterson used the occasion to deliver an equally important message.
Welcoming residents and visitors alike, he reminded the public that safety is everyone’s responsibility throughout the festival. Patterson spoke candidly about illegal firearms, domestic violence and road safety, stressing that there is no place for violence during the celebrations and urging festival-goers to make responsible choices, particularly where alcohol and driving are concerned.
Beyond the speeches, Opening Night also offered a glimpse of what lies ahead.
Contestants competing in this year’s Prince and Princess, Talented Teen and Miss Anguillian pageants, alongside entrants in the Junior and Senior Calypso Monarch and Junior Soca Monarch competitions, confidently introduced themselves to the audience, inviting supporters to attend their respective shows over the coming days.
The evening itself embraced the festival’s celestial theme with interactive experiences, including the imaginative “Scan Your Star” feature, creative art spaces, live entertainment and the promise of the now-famous Galactic Madness parade route – the latter of which kicked off the evening’s festivities. The celebrations concluded with a vibrant fireworks display that lit up the night sky — a fitting finale for an opening ceremony built around stars, light and shared celebration.
Meanwhile, the hosts looked ahead to the days still to unfold, declaring that for the next several days, Anguilla would become “the brightest star in the Caribbean.” It was an ambitious sentiment, but one that feels entirely believable at this time of year.
