ALHCS OBSERVES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE BOY CHILD

The Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School (ALHCS) marked the International Day of the Boy Child as male students and male members of staff wore ties on Friday, 15th May 2026. The gesture, though simple, carried symbolic meaning. The tie represented pride, responsibility, dignity, and aspiration, a reminder that young men should be encouraged to see themselves as future leaders, professionals, fathers, mentors, and contributors to society.

Observed each year on May 16, the International Day of the Boy Child focuses on the wellbeing and development of boys. While not officially recognised by the United Nations, the observance has gained attention in many countries, including Anguilla, where concerns about the challenges facing young men continue to grow.

Founded in 2018, the initiative is credited to Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, a University of the West Indies (St. Augustine) lecturer and social commentator whose work has consistently highlighted the need to address issues affecting men and boys with seriousness, compassion, and balance. The initiative continues to raise an important question: what happens when boys grow up without enough emotional support, guidance, affirmation, or opportunities for healthy development?

The founder noted that the observance is not meant to take away from the challenges faced by girls or from wider efforts toward gender equality. Instead, it broadens the conversation by recognising that healthy societies require both boys and girls to be supported.

The initiative encourages more open conversations about the emotional, social, and educational needs of boys. Too often, discussions focus mainly on discipline or underachievement without looking at the pressures many boys face, including expectations to hide emotion or deal with struggles on their own.

In Anguilla and across the region, concerns remain about academic performance, mental health, exposure to violence and harmful influences, and the lack of consistent mentorship for some young men. At the same time, young men in our communities continue to show leadership, creativity, athletic talent, and strong commitment to their families and communities.

The International Day of the Boy Child serves as both a celebration of those strengths and a reminder of the importance of continued encouragement from schools, families, and the wider community. The real challenge is to move beyond one-day observances and provide boys with mentorship, positive role models, safe spaces for open conversation, and guidance that encourages growth and development. When boys thrive, communities thrive with them.
