On Thursday 8th December 2016, Shellya Rogers graduated from the University of Birmingham with a Master’s Degree in Public Management (Local Policy and Leadership) with Distinction. In 2015 Ms. Rogers was awarded the prestigious Chevening Scholarship by the United Kingdom’s Foreign Commonwealth Office. The scholarship is designed for individuals with an interest in taking on leadership roles in their areas of study, making a significant contribution to growth and development in their country and the capacity to undergo post graduate level studies.
During Ms. Rogers’ time at university she was given the opportunity on multiple occasions to serve as an expert for various modules in the School of Local Government and Society while representing the university at numerous conferences and panel discussions. Ms. Rogers also took advantage of opportunities to discuss the Anguilla Public Service, Tourism and Festivals on the island through interviews with Quays News and BBC.
Ms. Rogers noted, “My Chevening experience has redefined my focus as an academic, a professional and a leader. I was blessed with a rare opportunity to pursue post graduate studies in an exceptional educational system, travel throughout Europe and the U.K, attend life changing conferences and meet with some of the most inspiring intellectuals, diplomats and students. I am now a more confident professional who is anxious to make significant contributions to my community, the Anguilla Public Service and the island.”
In addition to her Master’s Degree, Ms. Rogers holds an Associate’s Degree in Business Studies and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Arts Management with minors in Business Administration and Political Science (Summa Cum Laude).
Ms. Rogers wishes to express sincere gratitude to Her Excellency, Ms. Christina Scott and the staff at the Governor’s office for making the scholarship application process a smooth and pleasant one and the Government of Anguilla, Ministry of Social Development & the Department of Youth and Culture for supporting her leave request. She also wishes to thank her family, friends and fiancé for their unwavering love and support.
A former Miss Talented Teen and Miss Anguilla, Ms. Rogers continues to represent her family and island well. Ms. Rogers is the Senior Programme Officer, Culture at the Department of Youth and Culture and is committed to developing herself even further as she aspires to serve her island in an even higher capacity; public office. Her only regret is that her Father (Belden Rogers) and grandmother (Mary Petty) are not alive to share in her success.
