Organizers of the first ever “A Village Ting” which was held in East End on Monday 17th June, 2013, have reported their deep satisfaction with the outcome of this event. Counting it as a tremendous success, the committee has reflected, among other things, on the four to five hundred people from all walks of the island that flocked to the grounds of the Old East End School to partake in the carnival-like atmosphere which “A Village Ting” generated.
“A Village Ting” – a Family and Community Fun Day, kicked off to an early start with scores of people pouring on the grounds at around 10:00am. It went well into the night providing opportunities for individuals to engage in a variety of games, dancing, and other fun-related activities. A wide range of finger-licking food, prepared by the leading chefs, families and other individuals in the East End community, was also on sale at the attractively designed food stalls. Local and imported drinks, ice cream and an assortment of snacks, completed the food package.
Apart from the event being a business opportunity for individuals and families, “A Village Ting” also presented the Parent Teachers’ Association of the Morris Vanterpool Primary School with the opportunity to raise funds via a yard sale where items such as snacks, books, toys, clothing, and other house wares were on sale.
The highlight of the day was the Deion Richardson Classic – a bicycle race for seniors which took place in the afternoon along the eastern end of the island. Some eighteen cyclists participated and at the end Benjamin “Donga” Phillip emerged winner. Second place went to Sherwin “Shortman” Osbourne, while Joseph Hercules took the third position.
There was never a dull moment at “A Village Ting” as live entertainment was provided throughout the day by the young and upcoming Better Vybes Band; De Movements Band; Singing Roxy; and the Scratch and Took and the Boys Band.
In reflecting on the day’s success, one attendee commented: “I congratulate the organizers for an excellent job in pulling off this event. I was surprised to see the huge turnout of people from across the island seeing that it was the first time, and I commend the committee for their creativity and high level of organization. I think everybody was very pleased. I am definitely looking forward to ‘A Village Ting’ next year.”
