Dear Sir:
FESTIVAL DEL MAR A GREAT EVENT FOR THE VISITOR
My family and I were delighted when we read in the online version of The Anguillian that Festival Del Mar was on again for the sixth consecutive year. We were coming to Anguilla anyway for a holiday, but the holding of this event was also a big impetus for us to visit the island again and to look forward to the cultural and culinary function at Island Harbour we always enjoy so much.
From an outsider’s point of view, it is an event which has a lot of attraction for the visitor who is keen to know the cultural history of Anguilla and its people. Seafaring, boating and fishing are exciting traditions anywhere and, from what I have learnt, little Anguilla has much to celebrate.
We enjoyed mingling with the people, some of whom we know personally, and the fried fish, barbecued lobster, fried and baked johnny cakes and other delicacies. We also enjoyed the many activities and were particularly happy that rain did not wash out all of the celebrations on the first day.
If we must speak about one matter which the organisers might wish to look into, if possible, is the pricing of food. It must not give the impression that it is a money-making function with big profits for the vendors. Reasonably priced food items would be a greater attraction to the various stalls and would complement the celebrations of Festival Del Mar. I hope that I have not overstepped my bounds, but that is what other persons, whom I came, across thought as well.
My family and I salute the people of Anguilla and now take our leave from them as we return home to the United States.
Sincerely
George Lovelace & family
