Chamber presentation of cheque to Community College

The Anguilla Chamber of Commerce has awarded a scholarship to a second student to study for an Associate Degree in Business at the Anguilla Community College.

A cheque in the sum of US $5,000 was presented to the President of the College on Tuesday by President of the Chamber, Keithley Lake. The money is to be passed on as a scholarship to a financially-challenged student.
“This is the second year that the Board of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry will be making this award,” Mr. Lake said in making the presentation. “I would like to thank everyone who made this award possible – all the people who participated in our golf tournament and in our starry night adventure. The funds from those events are going to be used towards the scholarship that we will be giving …Unfortunately, we don’t yet have the name of the recipient because the Community College and the Chamber are still trying to agree on the criteria which is an agenda item for our next meeting.”

President of the Community College, Professor Delroy Louden, commended the Chamber for supporting the institution from its inception and contributing to its study programmes. He said that the Associate Degree programme normally covered three years.Although the scholarship money would not cover the full cost of the studies, it would allow the student to pursue certain courses, purchase textbooks, and meet other related costs such as attend entrepreneurship meetings outside the island related to the study programme.

Chairperson of the Board of Governors of the Community College, Mrs. Rhona Richardson-Royden, expressed gratitude to the Chamber of Commerce for providing the scholarship. “It helps the College to grow,” she added. “It exposes the College in very good light and we thank you for it.”

Chamber Board member, Mark Romney, said the scholarship was a significant investment in the partnership between the Chamber and the Community College, given the importance of education. “We hope it will be an on-going venture for our students and that more of them will be emerging through the programme,” he added.
