On the evening of Wednesday, June 24th, the Anguilla Festivals Development Commission, in collaboration with the Anguilla Summer Festival Committee, conducted a media launch to introduce the participants who will be contending for the crown in the 2026 Senior Calypso Monarch Competition.
The Chairman of the Anguilla Festivals Development Commission, Mr. Romare Kelsick remarked: “The Senior Calypso Monarch Competition provides a powerful platform for creativity, social commentary and the showcasing of exceptional talent with an artistry that has long defined the calypso tradition in Anguilla.”
He said that the Commission commends all participating calypsonians for their dedication to the art form and for their commitment to keeping Anguilla’s cultural traditions alive.
He thanked the several sponsors, partners committee members, volunteers and supporters whose contributions make events like this possible. “We extend our sincere appreciation,” he said, “and we invite the public to support the calypsonians throughout this calypso season.”
According to Chairperson of the Senior Calypso Monarch Sub-Committee, Mr. Mark Romney, there will be a total of 18 participants in the contest this year. He noted that the semi-finals is scheduled for July 11th at the Landsome Bowl Cultural Center, and 8 contestants will compete in the finals which is slated for August 6th.
Mr. Romney, in his remarks, laid out the basic customary rules of the competition, and in particular he advised the contestants to guard against defamatory lyrics. “It is very important that you, as calypsonians, safeguard yourselves against litigation, he cautioned. Anguilla has changed over the years, and it is now a very litigious society. So be sure that you are mindful of this when you are constructing your lyrics and during your performances.”
Of the eighteen prospective contestants, only eight were present for Wednesday’s launch. These were: Roxanne “Queen Roxxy” Webster; Rebecca “Queen B” Samuel; Steve “Hot Shot” Hodge; Roland “Jah Fire” Warner; McCraig “Iyahkayah Yahnantanah” Daniel; Leon “Messenger” Lake; Jason “Gossip” Lloyd; and Daryl “Decent” Connor.
