On Tuesday 13 May 2026, the Fire Prevention Unit of the Anguilla Fire and Rescue Service officially commenced its 2026 Fire Safety Training Programme with a comprehensive Fire Safety Training Workshop aimed at government workers as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen fire prevention awareness, emergency preparedness and public safety across Anguilla.
The session was facilitated by Ag. Sub. Officer Carronelle Gumbs-Romney and brought together a total of 30 participants from the Department of Sports, the Anguilla Air and Sea Ports Authority, the General Post Office and the Mental Health Unit.
Remarks were delivered by Deputy Governor Mr. Perin Bradley, who underscored the critical importance of prevention, preparedness and professional training within small island communities such as Anguilla.
In his address, the Deputy Governor stated: “The true measure of an emergency response system is not only how effectively it responds to crisis, but how successfully it prevents tragedy before it occurs.”
He further highlighted that these words carry special meaning within the Caribbean region, where small island communities are particularly vulnerable to emergencies including natural disasters, structural fires and other incidents that can quickly test national response capabilities.
Mr. Bradley emphasized that preparedness is not optional but essential, noting that fire safety extends beyond emergency response and includes building resilient communities, strengthening institutions and ensuring citizens understand their role in protecting themselves and others.
The Deputy Governor also commended the Anguilla Fire and Rescue Service for its continued commitment to fire prevention awareness, emergency preparedness and professional development throughout the community. He noted that initiatives such as these are critically important in helping to build technical competence, reinforce best practices and ensure that officers, institutions and the wider public remain prepared to respond effectively and confidently during emergencies.
He also paid tribute to the dedication and bravery of firefighters and emergency personnel, stating that while many people run away from danger, firefighters are the ones who run toward it…a level of service and sacrifice deserving of the highest respect and appreciation.
Participants engaged in both theoretical and practical components of the workshop, including fire prevention principles, emergency response procedures and the proper use of fire extinguishers.
The Anguilla Fire and Rescue Service remains committed to educating the public and strengthening community resilience through continuous training and outreach initiatives aimed at creating a safer Anguilla for all.
