Former Sixth Form student, Asharn Hodge, the first Anguillian student to be awarded a cricket scholarship, is now in Barbados to further his studies at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies.

Asharn, 17, was awarded the scholarship by the Anguilla Cricket Association in which he served as a valuable and successful player on the national team. He was accepted by the UWI after having obtained eleven CSEC subjects in the 2012 examinations taken in Form Five at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School. He will be studying for a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Accounting.

“You can expect to see a lot of great things from me,” Asharn told The Anguillian shortly before leaving the Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport. “This is just the beginning. I am doing it for Anguilla.” He spoke with the same confidence with which he helped Anguilla win the recent Leeward Islands 50-over cricket tournament.

Asharn’s father, Arnie S. Hodge, commented: “He is the kind of kid who, when he puts his mind to do something, puts his all into it. We therefore expect him to succeed in everything he undertakes, and so far he has been doing that. We are very proud of him and will continue to support him in what he is doing.”
His mother, Celeste Webster, wrapping her arms around him, said: “I thank all those who inspired Asharn along the way, especially cricket coach Cardi for his hard work. I also thank my son for his dedication and wish him the very best.”
