On Monday 21st October, 2024, Adrian T. Hazell Primary School was buzzing with excitement as students celebrated Numeracy Day with a series of engaging and creative Math-themed activities. The event, designed to promote the importance of numeracy skills, transformed learning into a fun, hands-on experience for students of all ages.
From the start of the day, the school’s atmosphere was lively as students arrived dressed in clothing featuring Math symbols, including numbers, shapes, and operations. The outfits added a sense of fun and energy to the occasion, with students proudly displaying their “Math identities.”
Some of the day’s highlights included a Math Relay, where students worked in teams to solve Math problems as quickly as possible. This high-energy event encouraged teamwork and quick thinking, as students raced against the clock to answer questions and complete a measurement race.
In addition to the relay, students in K -2 participated and were engaged as they had Math-themed storybooks read to them by Mrs. Shana Delaney, the Numeracy curriculum officer, Mrs. Cassilda Thomas-Brooks, librarian and Teacher Tiffany Thomas, principal. These stories brought Math concepts to life through engaging narratives. These stories helped illustrate how numbers and problem-solving are woven into everyday situations, sparking students’ imaginations and showing the creative side of Mathematics.
A key highlight of Numeracy Day was the integration of Math and ICT (Information and Communication Technology). Using the educational app Kahoots to have students explore Math concepts through interactive technology, blending the digital world with their numeracy skills. This activity showcased how technology can be a valuable tool in making Math more accessible and exciting for students.
Throughout the day, students enjoyed a variety of Math games, including Connect 4, Dominoes, Shape Hunt, Colour by number and many more. These activities helped reinforce Mathematical concepts such as logic, spatial reasoning, and pattern recognition in a fun, playful environment. The games also offered students a chance to practice their problem-solving skills while enjoying friendly competition.
Tr. Leonard Telemaque, Numeracy Coordinator expressed his delight with the success of Numeracy Day, stating, “It’s wonderful to see our students so enthusiastic about Math. Numeracy is an essential life skill, and events like these help to build confidence and foster a love for learning. Today was all about showing students that Math is everywhere, and it can be fun!”
The teachers, staff and members of the Numeracy Committee at the Adrian T. Hazell Primary School worked tirelessly to make Numeracy Day a memorable and enriching experience for the students. The event successfully combined learning and play, leaving students with a deeper appreciation for the role of Math in their daily lives.
As the day drew to a close, the smiles on the students’ faces were a testament to the success of Numeracy Day. The event not only helped to enhance their numeracy skills but also demonstrated that math can be enjoyable, engaging, and an essential part of their future.
