Director of Tourism, Stacey Liburd

On the eve of World Tourism Day, we celebrate the profound impact that tourism has on our economy, communities, and environment. This year’s theme, “Tourism and Green Investment,” highlights the crucial role that sustainable practices play in the development of our tourism industry.

Tourism has long been a major source of revenue and employment in our country. It has not only provided countless job opportunities and economic growth but has also showcased the unique culture, heritage, and natural resources that make our destination so special. However, we must recognize that tourism, if not managed responsibly, can have adverse effects on our environment. Mass tourism and unchecked development can result in deforestation, pollution, and the depletion of natural resources. This is why it is crucial for us to embrace green investment in the tourism sector.

Green investment refers to the implementation of sustainable practices that minimize the negative impacts of tourism while maximizing its benefits. It entails planning and managing tourism activities in a way that preserves and enhances our natural surroundings, while also contributing to the well-being of our communities.

One of the key components of green investment in tourism is promoting eco-friendly infrastructure and practices. This includes investing in renewable energy sources such as solar panels and wind turbines to power our hotels and resorts. It means adopting energy-efficient technologies, implementing waste management strategies, and supporting sustainable transportation options for visitors.

By focusing on green investment, we can create a win-win situation. It allows us to protect our natural environment upon which our tourism industry depends, while also attracting responsible travellers who are increasingly mindful of sustainability. Market trends show that said travellers seek destinations that respect and preserve their natural surroundings, cultural heritage, and local communities.

To achieve our green investment goals, collaboration among stakeholders is vital. Governments, tourism operators, hoteliers, and local communities must work together to implement and promote sustainable practices. We should provide the necessary incentives and support for businesses to adopt eco-friendly measures, such as certifications for sustainable tourism practices. Moreover, we must invest in educating and raising awareness among all tourism stakeholders. By fostering a culture of sustainability and responsible tourism, we can ensure that our efforts towards green investment are effective and long-lasting.

Tomorrow, as we celebrate World Tourism Day and reflect on the theme “Tourism and Green Investment,” let us commit to building a more sustainable and resilient tourism industry. Together, we can create a future where tourism not only brings economic benefits but also preserves our natural environment and enhances the overall well-being of our communities.

This is Stacey Liburd – your Director of Tourism – and I thank you for your continued support. Let us commit to working together towards a greener future for tourism.
