The University of the West Indies – Guild of Students – Anguilla Chapter Executive proudly launched the first instalment of Fresher’s Week for the Academic Year 23/24, a dynamic initiative designed to prepare newly enrolled students for their academic journey with the University.

Students Receiving Guidance via Student Created Resources

This engaging week of activities, coming off the heels of an engaging On-site Orientation Session held on Thursday, August 25, commenced with a heartwarming Back-To-School Service, aptly titled Fresher’s Fellowship, hosted by Pastor Phillip Gumbs at the Church of God of Holiness, on Sunday, August 27.

Fresher’s Fellowship set the tone for the week, offering both new and continuing students a sense of community and spiritual grounding as they embark on their educational journey. The service was a source of inspiration and guidance, reminding students of the support network available to them both within the UWI and the wider community as members of the congregation rallied behind the students in the pursuit of their goals. Pastor Phillip who is no stranger to The UWI, also extended the offer for students to actively participate in the service, rendering script readings in alignment with the focus of his message for the week, geared towards motivating students and faculty for the upcoming semester.

On Tuesday, August 29, the Guild Executive continued its commitment to supporting new students with the On-site Student Support initiative. This hands-on session aimed to provide fresh faces with essential support in course registration and planning, navigating the online learning environment, and ensuring they are well-prepared for the upcoming semester. The event served as a practical guide for students, ensuring a smooth transition into the new learning environment.

Thursday, August 31, witnessed an essential part of Fresher’s Week—the Academic Integrity Crash Course. This insightful session was facilitated by the esteemed fellow Pelican, Educator and the Dean of Studies at the Anguilla Community College, Dr. Michelle Queeley. The session emphasised the importance of Academic Integrity and Ethics and provided insight on how to stay in alignment with approved academic standards of writing, thereby setting high standards for students as they embark on their academic journey. Dr. Queeley’s guidance left students craving more knowledge and eager to seek further academic tutelage from her.

The enthusiasm and engagement demonstrated by students during Fresher’s Week underscores the importance of such initiatives in supporting their successful transition into university life and the online learning environment.

The Guild of Students Executive is committed to continuing its mission of empowering and nurturing the next generation of leaders and scholars. For more information about the UWI Global Campus Anguilla Guild of Students and its initiatives, please visit www.linktr.ee/UWIGC_GOS_AXA
