Anguilla Youth Representative, Ms. Tyeisha Emmanuel, has been elected Chair of the United Nations Youth Advisory Group (YAG) for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.
She recently traveled to Barbados to represent Anguilla at a two-day youth orientation and training workshop, organized by the United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office under the theme the theme: “Promoting Meaningful Youth Engagement”.
Ms. Emmanuel is a former Youth Parliamentarian who served in the appointed position of Youth Minister with responsibility for Social Development, Education & Library Services, and representative for District #4.
“I felt elated and honoured to have been selected to represent Anguilla on the United Nations Youth Advisory Group for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean 2022- 2023 and 2023 – 2024,” she said. “Representing Anguilla in this capacity is truly astounding. Being a British Overseas Territory frequently involves restrictions. Having a seat at the table to represent not only the voices of Anguilla’s youth, but also the youth of the Region, is remarkable.”
“Thanks to this forum, I was able to interact with Mr. Didier Trebuca, the UN Resident Coordinator, as well as representatives of the UN Subregional Team and employees of the UN Youth Envoy,” she said.
“I am grateful to my colleagues for electing me as Chair of the United Nations Youth Advisory Group for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean for the 2023 -2024 tenure,” she said. “I see this as an opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. I am thrilled to collaborate with the entire team throughout the upcoming term.”
The workshop exposed the youth leaders and advocates to the UN’s key programming instruments for the region including its 2022 – 2026 Multi-Country Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, which provides a blueprint for UN development assistance, as well as tailored Country implementation Plans that operationalize commitments at the country level in alignment with national priorities.
It also focused on the principles of meaningful, transformative, and responsible engagement.
The YAG was first established in 2022 to serve as a sounding board for the UN Barbados and Eastern Caribbean Multi-Country Office, and by extension provide an opportunity for youth to play an active and meaningful role in the sustainable development of the sub-region, working in close partnership with the UN Sub-regional team.
