Most of us can see a dietary disaster waiting to happen, when we a menu with double bacon cheeseburgers, slices of cheesecake or something pass its sell by date. Without much care we consume a host of unhealthy foods daily. Food that has been sitting right in our refrigerators for sometime. These foods add extra calories, fat, sugar and/or salt to the diet without our realizing it. Let’s have a look at least ten of the worst foods in our refrigerators or freezers. The foods mentioned here are quite commonplace in our kitchens and are quite high in trans and saturated fats, sugars, salt and a variety of other artificial ingredients

First up is mayonnaise, invented in 1756, it’s one of those foods we keep in our refrigerators. Mayonnaise in itself might not be the worst of foods but that’s if you only consume it sparingly. There is approximately forty(40) grams of fat per quarter cup serving. Using just two teaspoons would provide you about sixty(60) calories and 6.7 grams of fat. If you consume a lot of mayonnaise, here’s some information that might interest you:

? Mayonnaise made from certain oils are super rich in omega-6, which causes Inflammation. Mayonnaise is produced using either vegetable or soybean oil, quite often these oils are refined and most likely include other genetically modified ingredients. Over-consumption of these omega-6 fatty acid in relation to omega-3 fatty acids contribute heavily to chronic inflammation, which then leads to a host of health issues such as: chronic inflammatory conditions and other serious illnesses including cancers, arthritis, heart disease & diabetes.

? A tablespoon of mayonnaise has approximately ninety calories and ten grams of fat. Eating mayonnaise loads you up on the calories without realising it. Soybean oil, an ingredient in store-bought mayonnaise has been shown to increase one’s risk for obesity & other disease conditions.

? Store-bought mayonnaise is laden with artificial ingredients and preservatives, which causes unwanted changes in brain function.

A study from the University of California, Riverside, published a report in February 2020, Endocrinology, showed there is a link between soybean oil consumption & brain function. In the study two types of soybean oil were researched and both effected the brain in the same negative way. The area of the brain affected is responsible for several functions e.g. regulating body weight, body temperature, metabolism, reproduction and our response to stress.

Looking closely & carefully reading the labels on the unhealthy foods sitting in our refrigerators, which we consume each day. We will see the added empty calories, in the way of fats, sugar and/or salt in our diets. The foods mentioned are commonplace on many supermarket shelves as they are in our kitchens. These foods are high in trans-fats, saturated fats, sugars and salt.

Solid saturated and trans-fats contribute to heart disease. Referred to as solid fats because they are solid at room temperature. It includes butter, shortening & margarine. Fatty meats, creams, skin from the chicken, bacon and some cheeses containing solid fats are also in this category. The healthier fats are the unsaturated fats, which are liquid at room temperature like your oils e.g. extra or virgin olive or coconut oils. A hydrogenated oil is also considered a solid fat. Hydrogenated oils are your margarines, prepackaged desserts and baked goods.

Here are some healthier options:
? Lean protein and sea foods. Try to consume at least sixteen(16) ounces of fish weekly, instead of fat-laden meats.

? Use cold press or extra virgin oils such as flaxseed, olive and coconut oils instead of margarines or butter.

? Consume mostly whole grains instead of cereals or breads made with refined grains.

? Healthier food choices also include beans, fruits, vegetables and plant-base milks.

Eat Less of the:
? Heavy heart disease causing saturated fats, refined/processed oils.

? Refined/processed sugars & other white products such as white flour, rice, oils, vinegar and white pasta.

? Fast foods & refined grain products

? Smoked, cured, bar-b-Que & salted foods

These simply recommendations can reduce your risk for many of the chronic no-communicable disease illnesses e.g. high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes & other preventable, reversible chronic degenerative conditions, to include: memory problems, Alzheimer’s disease & premature ageing.
