The Department of Health Protection, through its Environmental Health Officers, is tasked with the power to issue Food Premises Licence in respect of premises carrying on a food business. The Food Hygiene Regulations state that “if any person carries on any food business on premises which have not been licensed…. (he/she) is guilty of an offence… and is liable on summary conviction to a fine of EC$5000.00. This simply means that all food premises owners, or operators, MUST ensure that their food premises are inspected annually and display a food premises licence in a conspicuous place in the food premises… in order to comply with the regulations.
Food premises that were operational last year and do not intend to operate in 2022 in accordance with Section 2 (2) of the Food Hygiene Regulation shall by notice communicate such intensions in writing to an Environmental Health Officer within the Department of Health Protection on or before the 1st March 2022. Failure to do so shall result in the owner or operator having to pay the relevant licence fee, once the premises is inspected by an Environmental Health Officer and is deemed operational, suitable and conforms to the requirements of the Food Hygiene Regulations.
The Department of Health Protection is advising all individuals, firms or businesses, intending to engage in the sale of food, that they MUST register their interest or food business operation with an Environmental Health Officer within the Department of Health Protection.
Food premises owners that have had their annual inspection, and have not paid or collected their Food Premises Licence, should do so by visiting the Environmental Health Unit of the Department of Health Protection on the 2nd Floor of, the Babrow Building within seven (7) Days of conforming to the requirements.
