Some thirty-three new students this week began their online studies at The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Anguilla. This Semester Two cohort brings the online enrollment numbers for the 2021/2022 academic year to one hundred and nineteen. It follows the graduation of yet another record number of thirty-six students in 2021. The majority of the new students are enrolled in degree programmes, while some are taking advantage of the “Special Admissions” opportunity to undertake selected online courses.
As part of their orientation/registration activities, The UWI Open Campus Anguilla hosted a special online Orientation/Meet & Greet Session. Among those on hand to welcome and offer support to the new students were Chair of the UWI Open Campus Anguilla Guild of Students, Ms. Melissa Harrigan, Secretary, Ms. Jahnesha Jones, Site Staff, Ms. Arlene Browne-Richardson, Ms. Patricia Bryan and Ms. René Henry and Manager of the British Overseas Territories Open Campus Sites, Dr. Phyllis Fleming- Banks.
The Session included information on the role of the Guild, the available support, scholarship and other opportunities, as well as tips on how to network and stay on course with their studies. The new students expressed their appreciation to The UWI Staff and the Guild for the assistance provided thus far, as well as their excitement to embark on this new academic journey.
In her congratulatory remarks, Dr. Fleming-Banks thanked and commended the new students for choosing The UWI – a university that is well-placed in the top 1.5 per cent of universities in the world. “Not only are you part of a distinguished institution that will provide you with a relevant, world-class education. You have also chosen a University that offers you the flexibility of achieving your goals at a fraction of external costs, without leaving your family or your jobs,” she said.
According to Dr. Fleming-Banks, the UWI Open Campus Anguilla Site is pleased that in addition to its more mature students, the local arm of the University continues to see an increasing number of younger students, who are taking advantage of the opportunity to earn their degrees without incurring the huge loans normally associated with tertiary education. A Bachelor’s Degree from start to finish at the UWI Open Campus averages US$12,000.00, while Master’s Degrees cost about US$8,000.00 and Doctoral programmes average US$20,000.00.
With the Semester Two for online students underway, The UWI Open Campus Anguilla is now registering participants for its local, Continuing and Professional Development Programmes that are scheduled to begin during the first week of February. Interested persons are invited to contact the UWI Open Campus at 497-8156 or email anguilla@open.uwi.edu.
