Inside Uncle Ralph’s House

In the corner of Sandy ground, just northeast of Elvis Beach Bar sits a gateway to Aguilla’s past. Uncle Ralph’s House – a little orange, turquoise, and white showcase house – depicts Anguillan life pre-1980’s. Everything from the yard, bedroom, furniture, and electronics is from the 1950s to the 1970s. When you step inside you’re swept away with nostalgia.

Visitors can participate in a one-of-a-kind scavenger hunt using their technological devices. Those who discover all the items are rewarded with a prize of Sandy Ground salt. Local games like marbles, slaps and pinchers, jacks, and ring games are also featured in the house on occasion.

Uncle Ralph’s House is in collaboration with Sandy Ground Tales, a book series that also talks of the culture and history of Anguilla.

Avenella Griffith, author of Sandy Ground Tales, is also the creator of the showcase home. She came up with the ideas of Uncle Ralph’s House when her grandfather passed away in 2017 and the house became vacant. She said, “God dropped this idea in my head about using the house to be a showpiece home that would capture where we were as a people, mark how far God has brought us and allow us to honour and give thanks to our forebears for all they contributed towards our growth, development and success.”

Avenella has much experience in creating games, especially treasure hunts! She has organised them for schools, churches, businesses, and other organisations.

Her grandfather, Ralph Carty, built the house in 1961 after Hurricane Donna destroyed his home.

The full opening of Uncle Ralph’s House will take place around mid to late February 2022.

Visitors and residents may experience this historic home Monday through Friday 10:00am-4:00pm. For more information, call 264-772-7584 or email sandygroundtales@gmail.com.
