OBSERVATIONS IN ANGUILLA: A SCHOOL LOCATION WITH A DIFFERENCE

Main part of school building

The Vivien Vanterpool Primary School, at Island Harbour, is perhaps the only school in Anguilla that offers excellent and unobstructed views of the island’s seacoast, coastline and multiple boats in the inshore waters.
One building, in particular, used for the computer lab, is so close to the surf that part of its eastern foundation has suffered from much erosion. The fact is that with sea level rise, this building may disappear in years to come.

Farther to the west, are the remaining school buildings – a stone’s throw to the sea – and there is also a fancy-looking gazebo recently constructed to serve as a lunch-eating facility, among other purposes.
But the Vivien Vanterpool Primary School would not have this beautiful location if plans to abandon the site, and to build far to the west, past the main population settlement, had materialised. The Island Harbour residents kicked up a big storm when the plans to re-locate the school were being discussed. Nothing has been heard about that proposal since.
