Gender Affairs Anguilla celebrated Men’s Week from Sunday, June 20 – Sunday 27 June 2021. The week was celebrated under the theme “MILES for Health: Men Inspiring, Leading, Educating and Supporting Health”. Men’s Week 2021 focused on celebrating and supporting men who Inspire, Lead, Educate and Support Health Initiatives and healthy lifestyles in Anguilla. The twelve (12) selected honourees engaged with the community throughout the week with visits to primary schools, ALHCS-WISE Campus, Zenaida Haven and various radio talk shows.
In addition, the week highlighted the honourees and their respective work towards promoting and empowering holistic, healthy lifestyles.
Gender Affairs collaborated with the Health Promotion Unit and Crispin Brooks to present the Cocktales Hour Podcast where a diverse group of men discussed the topic ‘Men Infertility Issues’. The panel included well known Anguillian Urologist Dr. John Franklin and Road March Champion, Tyrone ‘Latest’ Brooks, as well as 2021 honouree Pastor Rondy Isles-Carty and past honourees Clemvio Hodge, Neville Hamilton and Ivan Connor. Health information was provided to several males across the Island and over fifty (50) males had their blood pressure and other vital signs checked by volunteer students from the St. James Medical School. The MILES for Health Walk scheduled for Saturday 26th June was postponed due to inclement weather however, ACAN’s fundraising breakfast was a success!
Men’s Week 2021 culminated with Barbershop Chat at the popular Wilmer’s Barbershop. Honourees discussed mental health stigma in our community and highlighted solutions and coping methods for addressing mental health challenges. The discussion continued at the DG’s Gathering hosted by the Hon. Deputy Governor, Mr. Perin Bradley. The honourees committed to work as a collective to identify and strategise on areas of concern for men in our community and to bring forth actionable solutions.
