The attention of The Anguillian has been drawn to a 114-page draft of an Independence Constitution purportedly prepared by the Constitutional and Electoral Reform Committee headed by Reverend John A. Gumbs.

A quick glance at the document, appears to suggest November 2014 as the date by which Anguilla should achieve independence.

Before word of the document was circulated, the matter regarding the drafting of the new constitution was raised by a reporter at the Governor’s press conference on Tuesday this week.

Governor Harrison replied: “I have heard that work is continuing on the constitution but nothing has been formally brought to the Executive Council. I expect to hear about it. So I don’t know the answer to this, so you would have to ask the Constitution Revision Committee…

“I can reiterate what I have said many times – actually since I became Governor more than three and a half years ago. Once there is an agreed position by Anguilla on the next constitution, then the Foreign Office is ready to start discussing the drafting of the next. As far as the UK Government is concerned, they are ready whenever Anguilla is.”

The Anguillian was unable to reach Rev. Gumbs for comment before press time, but was informed that he was off island.
