DEPARTMENT OF DISASTER MANAGEMENT TO CONDUCT TSUNAMI EXERCISE ON NOVEMBER 20,2020

On November 20th, 2020, the Department of Disaster Management will conduct its annual tsunami response exercise. This exercise is being conducted as a direct replacement for the March 19th CaribeWave exercise in which Anguilla chose not to participate due to the national strategy for reducing risk to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The principal reasons for this exercise are the Department of Disaster Management’s commitment to ensuring the public is aware of what to do in the event of an actual earthquake and tsunami, and for private and public sector organisations to test their plans and familiarise themselves with the evacuation procedures.
“Tsunami events may be rare, but they have the potential to cause a lot of harm – and they can occur without advance warning. Recent regional seismic developments in the region reinforces the need for communities to avoid complacency.” Calvin Andre Samuel, Director of the Department of Disaster Management, opined.
The exercise will simulate the magnitude of the earthquakes as included in the 2020 Caribwave 20 exercise, with some modifications,- in order to effectively implement local tsunami response plans and the customary evacuation exercise for the Primary Schools and participating critical facilities.
For assistance or further information regarding the Tsunami exercise, please contact Mr. Alwyn J. Richardson at the Department of Disaster Management on 497-2926 or email alwyn.richardson@gov.ai.
