International Housekeeping Week is a celebration of staff members who work behind the scenes to maintain the quality, safety and cleanliness of facilities such as, hospitals, hotels, and nursing homes. Recognised worldwide since 1981, the week honours the efforts and dedication of professionals who maintain a clean, safe and healthy environment for their employers and the public. This year, for the first time, the Housekeeping Department at Princess Alexandra Hospital joined housekeepers all over the world to celebrate International Housekeeping Week from the 6th-12th September, 2020. The Theme for this year is “Housekeeping: Our Shining Stars.”
The activities commenced with a church service on Sunday the 6th, at The Church of God Prophecy in West End. Bishop Samuel Daniel encouraged the congregation to pray steadfastly and to be vigilant and watchful in prayer. Dr. Daniel went on to say that the only thing that is going to get us through COVID-19 is prayer. On Monday a motivational dialogue was facilitated by Ms. Melissa Hodge, Senior Environmental Health Officer. This dialogue on adopting a positive attitude was very well received. The Housekeepers visited the Church of God Prophecy Preschool, on Tuesday, where they demonstrated to the preschoolers the proper handwashing techniques to prevent the spread of diseases – and infections such as COVID. On Wednesday, the Housekeepers were treated to a delicious luncheon compliments of English Rose Restaurant. Two Open Days were facilitated by the Laundresses and Housekeepers at both the Laundry Room and Accident and Emergency Department on Thursday and Friday respectively. The week culminated in a very successful Social Event for Housekeepers and other healthcare professionals.
The Housekeeping Supervisor, Executive Manager, and Chief Executive Officer of the Health Authority of Anguilla, extend sincere thanks to all the persons mentioned above – and those persons behind the scenes who contributed to making this International Housekeeping week of activities a success.
Housekeeping is one of the most important jobs in a hospital setting. However, it is no secret that the housekeeping and laundry workers are often the unsung heroes in healthcare. Housekeepers form a critical link in the chain when it comes to patient care delivery. The essential role housekeepers play must never be underestimated as they are extremely vital to the prevention of infection, and the safety all the workers, patients and visitors who enter the doors of the Princess Alexandra Hospital.
