It is not normal for the seaweed of sargassum that freely makes its way across the Caribbean to smarm Cove Bay Beach on Anguilla’s west coast. But currently the expansive beach is filled with the debris.
It may be somewhat difficult to clean – except some heavy equipment is brought in to do the work. Even if this is done quickly, there is still a quantity of seaweed lurking in the inshore water to wash up on the Cove Bay Beach east of Belmond Cap Juluca.
The littering of the Cove Bay Beach is thought to have been brought about by southerly strong winds and high sea wells. Normally, the incoming seaweed drifts farther out to sea thus avoiding the beach.
