The over twenty participants represented the Departments of Education and Inland Revenue, the Anguilla Electricity Company, JTR Security, da’Vida Restaurant and Spa, Island Harbour Care Centre and Webster Dyrud Mitchell.

Speaking on behalf of the Anguilla Community College, Director of Hospitality Training, Sharon Richardson, said: “As with any leadership course, no matter where your job is on the organisational chart, at some point you will have to be a leader. We therefore think it is necessary to equip people with the strategies and techniques to be effective leaders. Hopefully, when the participants finish this training, they will go back and empower the organistions and help us to continue building our island nation.”

Asked about the interest of the participants in the leadership seminar, Ms. Richardson replied: “There was so much interest that we could not accommodate everybody this time, so we are hoping to have another one later on. Right now there are twenty-two persons registered for this course.

The objective of the seminar was to move from generally good practices, to a more “conscious competence” to strengthen specific skills among persons in leadership positions.

Facilitator Melinda Goddard with participants

The seminar began with an assessment of a leadership plan, and the strengths and potential of individuals The participants examined ways to link their teams’ efforts to a compelling future; incorporate the customer in driving their strategies; reaching across and beyond the enterprise to partner with other departments and stakeholders to achieve outstanding results; and building credibility and trust in every interaction.

The sessions were developed and facilitated, on behalf of the Community College, by Melinda Goddard, Principal of Clien Tell Consulting. The training was based on a study of more than four hundred and fifty companies and over seven hundred managers and staff. The study was published in Everyone a Leader and is being used as a training model for excellence.
