The late Mr David Hodge

Anguillians woke up this morning, February 17, 2020 to the sad news of the passing of one of its patriots, the late David Nathaniel Hodge of Long Path, Anguilla. He was affectionately and respectfully known, as “Uncle David” or “Hodge” to many Anguillians.
I feel duty bound, based on his contribution not only to the cause of the Anguilla struggle, but also as a pioneer in many aspects of business, particularly wholesale and distribution, to extend condolences on behalf of the Government and people of Anguilla, as well as on my own behalf, to the family and friends of this fallen patriot.

Of notable mention is his participation in furthering the cause of indigenous business through his articulation of the need for policy provisions that would allow local businesses to be more competitive in an increasingly challenging global environment.
He was one of the early supporters of the National Bank of Anguilla – and a substantial stakeholder who understood what a viable resolution meant for the stabilization of the Anguillian economy. The late Mr. Hodge was never one to retreat from giving his frank opinion on any issue affecting Anguilla and Anguillians.

The late Mr. Hodge on returning home from the United Kingdom, in the sixties, established the Tropical Flower Social Centre which became one of the popular venues for social and cultural events, in many of which he played the role of promoter as well. From these modest beginnings he expanded into the largest wholesale and distribution service on the island – that continues to play an invaluable role in the promotion of social and cultural events.
This business became the platform for his other ventures into Anguilla’s social and economic development. Among the foremost of these was his contribution to the upgrading of the Anguilla Ferry Services and Fuel Station Services. We believe that Mr. Hodge is indeed a stalwart who contributed towards ensuring that that strong Anguilllian spirit of entrepreneurship is alive and well — through his example and mentorship in the community.

Anguilla indeed mourns the passing of a great citizen who touched the lives of so many persons, young and old, in so many ways. I share with his family; his many friends; and indeed all Anguillians in mourning his loss.
May his soul rest in peace!
