There are ten practical workshops, camps drawn up this summer for young people, across Anguilla, whose parents have joined with teachers on the island, and the Department of Youth and Culture, to enable the children to develop various cultural and social life skills.

One such camp was about the baking of an assortment of dainties. It was a delightful event at the ALHCS’ Home Economics Department on July 12. It was part of the Educational Summer Creative Arts Production and Entertainment Programme (Youth E.S.C.A.P.E.)

Mrs. Kalyn Mairyshaw, Programme Assistant at the Department of Youth and Culture, spoke about the event: “This particular programme is called ‘the Culinary Baking Camp’ and we are having an exhibition of the work done by the participating young people. The camp started on the 8th of July and now, with its end, we are having a display – as will be the case following the conclusion of all the other camps. Mrs. Anita Martin-Ruan and Mrs. Charmaine Rey-Richardson have been the facilitators for this exciting and fun-filled baking programme.”

The Youth and Cultural Arts representative continued: “The aim of the programme is basically to enhance the baking skills of young persons who are interested in the work – and provide something for them to do during this summer. They are in different age ranges – some are between the ages of nine to twelve, and are from the primary and comprehensive schools. We have twenty-four students this year and it is our largest camp.”
