His Excellency, Governor Tim Foy, delivered his second Anguilla Day Address since arriving in Anguilla in late August 2017.
Speaking during the Anguilla Day Official Parade at the Ronald Webster Park on Thursday, May 30, 2019, he spoke in appreciation about a number of far-sighted and brave individuals who had set out to chart a course through difficult waters for Anguilla.
He listed five men who have held the highest office in Anguilla over the years – Mr. Ronald Webster, Sir Emile Gumbs,Mr. Hubert Hughes, Mr. Osbourne Fleming and the current leader, Premier Victor Banks. The Governor also referred to other persons who held ministerial office and House of Assembly positions over the years.
In addition, he mentioned those who have protected Anguilla through their work in the Royal Anguilla Police Force, the Fire Service, Her Majesty’s Prison and the Customs and Immigration services.
He also paid tribute to the media – a key institution in a democratic society. He especially spoke about Radio Anguilla – the nation’s station, now observing its 50th Anniversary; and the work of Nat Hodge, Editor of The Anguillian newspaper.
The Governor did not forget a number of Anguilla’s athletes and other sportspersons whom he said were continuing to excel on the world stage.
Looking ahead, Governor Foy stated: “By any objective assessment, Anguilla has made great strides in the past twelve months and in the 20 or so months – since the passage of Hurricane Irma – Anguilla is firmly on a positive trajectory.
“But we still have much to do – and sincerity requires me to say that the job of reconstruction of infrastructure, our economy and public finances is not yet complete.
“But I have confidence in those leading that effort here – and in the partnership with the United Kingdom – that we will achieve what was planned and more. In the next twelve months I expect to see more other things.”
Governor Foy continued: “I anticipate further revisions to the Constitution to be agreed with the United Kingdom. While I stay outside those discussions, I can say both sides of the constitutional partnership recognise the need to update their relationship.
“I also expect the tempo of political discourse to increase as elections draw near. Preparations for the 2020 elections are well in hand and I am confident that the team at the electoral office –led by Ms. Aurjul Wilson – will organise an efficient, fair and free election.
“And they will be assisted by the integrity, good grace and democratic commitment of all seeking public office, their supporters and the people of this island.”
