The Anguilla Tennis Academy (ATA) was very successful in the Eighth Annual FirstCaribbean Bank Youth Tennis Tournament held at Port de Plaisance, St. Maarten, last weekend.

Avern Gumbs and Sabrina Connor represented Anguilla in the Female Open Class. Sixteen-year-old Avern emerged the tournament’s champion, defeating all her opponents. Sabrina won two matches and placed third overall.

The tournament was structured in a best of seven games round robin format and was organized by Les Brown. Coach George Richards of the ATA – and family members – accompanied the players who competed against those from St Maarten St Martin.

MitchLake, Founder of the ATA, commented, “I am very proud of Avern and her accomplishment playing in her first regional tournament. Her victory is testament to her recent, rapid growth and training at the ATA.”

Avern observed: “ My quick footwork, good ball placement and mental toughness help to ensure my success, but all thanks to God for my first tournament victory”.

Players from St Maarten and neighbouring islands will be invited to participate in a similar youth tournament at the ATA this coming November.
