Three lucky young tennis players from the Anguilla Tennis Academy (ATA), accompanied by a coach and two parents, leave the island, today (August 31), for New York where they will spend two days at the US Open Tennis Tournament. The players were chosen for their hard work all year in tennis and other sports; in academics; and in the performing arts.
Those selected are Xander Owen-Vasilis aged 13, Myisha Letang aged 11 and nine-year-old Nandi Edwards. They will be accompanied by a coach, Vallan Hodge, and two parents: Annmarie Letang and Michelle Owen-Vasilis.
Founder of the ATA, Mitchelle Lake, commented: “The ATA is committed to providing opportunities for its youth through the sport of tennis. The opportunity for young participants to observe world class tennis, at the US Open Grand Slam event, is an opportunity of a lifetime. It is my wish that they will become motivated and aspire to one day to compete on such a grand stage.”
The ATA delegation will be staying at the Warwick New York Hotel, compliments Paul Lowerre and family, friends of the ATA. Tickets for two days at the tournament were donated by David Robin and family, other long time supporters of the ATA. During their stay the group will have the opportunity to tour New York and visit the top attractions and landmarks there – and also spend time at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills. They return to Anguilla on September 4.
Paul Lowerre said of the visit, “The Lowerre Family is very excited once again to support the ATA delegation with their visit to the US Tennis Open inNew York City. It offers some of the most promising young players a chance to experience tennis played at its highest level, in a venue of enormous prestige. This year the group will also serve as ambassadors for the ATA when they visit the famous West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills for sporting matches with members of the New York Junior Tennis League.”
