Anguilla was among a number of regional islands whose leaders and other representatives were at a meeting of the Clinton Global Foundation in San Juan, Puerto, this week. The Anguilla Chief Minister, Mr. Victor Banks, arranged for the Minister of Health and Social Development, Mr. Evans Rogers, to deputize for him at the event.
Prior to leaving the island on Tuesday, January 29, Mr. Rogers told The Anguillian newspaper: “I am going to Puerto Rico to a meeting of the Clinton Global Foundation along with [accompanied by members of] the Anguilla United Relief Fund. There are a number of topics to be dealt with. The meeting is about resilience in building stronger after the hurricane disaster and so forth. There will be Heads of Government from around the region in particular. There will be discussions on mental health, the importance of child safety, renewal energy and on other matters. I am looking forward to it.
“The Anguilla United Relief Fund has been very generous to Anguilla prior to and post Hurricane Irma. The owners of the Altamer project are involved in that Fund and will be there – as well as President and Mrs. Clinton. Anguilla is looking forward to a continued relationship with the Clinton Global Foundation and the Anguilla United Relief Fund as they continue their efforts to assist us.
“The Anguilla Relief Fund was very instrumental after the hurricane in assisting us with several donations to healthcare. The Fund is assisting in education projects; is working on the West End Cultural and Craft Centre to make it more energy efficient with solar power.
“There is a lot that is happening with respect to this particular meeting in San Juan. Of course, San Juan was hit by both Hurricanes Irma and Maria – and Anguilla was struck by Irma as well as Antigua, Dominica and other islands. So at the meeting we will be looking at how we can prepare ourselves prior and before the hurricane season to be able to have access to funding to assist us in our recovery.”
