On Thursday November 29th 2018, members of the Anguilla Family Planning Association presented (AFPA) Nurse Susan Harrigan with a bouquet of flowers in honour of her longstanding contribution to the Association.
Nurse Harrigan was trained in the U.K. as a Registered Nurse/Midwife. She later pursued further training in Public Health at the School of Public Health, Jamaica, and Nursing Administration at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica. Nurse Harrigan was employed by the Government of Anguilla – in the Ministry of Health – and was the first Principal Nursing Officer in Anguilla. She was also the first president of the Anguilla Family Planning Association, a position she held for a number of years. She was awarded the Anguilla Badge of Honour and Queen’s Certificate in 2013 for her contribution in the area of Social Development.
The Anguilla Family Planning Association was started by Mr Don Mitchell Q.C., CBE, and his wife, Margaret, in the early 1980s – and was officially registered in 1984. It is a non-profit organisation run by volunteers. The AFPA is an affiliate member of Caribbean Family Planning Association and the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF).
The main objectives of the AFPA are:-
• To procure commodities from IPPF for the Anguillian community.
• To promote sexual and reproductive rights.
• To advance family planning services through information and advocacy in partnership with government and non-governmental organisation.
Nurse Harrigan continues to work with the AFPA in achieving its objectives. The AFPA would like to thank her for her outstanding and dedicated service not only to AFPA but to the Anguillian public. The association takes this opportunity to wish her peace and happiness today and everyday.
