The Adrian T. Hazell Primary School recently culminated their Literacy Month (October-November) with a number of activities.
The ‘Crazy Socks’ day fundraiser saw both students and teachers expressing their creativity in very unique and interesting ways. A new, exciting and educational contest was introduced – ‘A Literacy Relay.’ Grades one to six were each represented by four students from each of the school’s three houses- green, blue and yellow. Houses had to strategically choose between academic ability and agility. Students and teachers both seemed to delight in this activity immensely as students sprinted to answer questions in four categories. These categories involved sight words, sentence completion, parts of speech and vocabulary. Green house undoubtedly found the impeccable balance between ability and agility, as they effortlessly emerged victorious, blue second and yellow third.
The Inter-House Spelling Bee continued to ignite students interest in Literacy as they were asked to spell words from all areas of their academics. Once again Green House emerged victorious, blue house took second place followed by yellow house in third.
A “continuous story” book was also started. The book is divided into three (3) sections. Section one will be written by the students of Kindergarten, Grade One and SEN, section two by the students of Grades Two and Three and section three by students of Grades Four, Five and Six. Students’ entries are expected to be added throughout the school year.
The ordering of reading books from Scholastics Book Club was revived, as students have just completed their first order and are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their books. Students of Kindergarten engaged in story telling with a representative from the Lions Community.
The seventh (7th) annual Tr. Dorothy Reading Awards, highlighted the excellence of 181 students who were awarded first to third class honours based on the reading results from the 2017- 2018 academic year was also held.
Our Literacy Month climaxed with a bang, as a group of students who represented the school at the 3rd Annual Teacher George Wenham Choral Speaking Competition once again emerged victorious.
On behalf of the principal, staff and students we would like to express our sincere gratitude to our continued supporters and varied sponsors.
