The Anguilla Diabetes Association is continuing to promote awareness about diabetes which is a leading health concern on the island. As part of a just-ended week of activities, there was a walking competition particularly for radio stations personnel, and their supporters, attired in the choice colour of the station.

The walk, dubbed “Diabetes Night Light”, was held at Coronation Park on Thursday evening, November 15. Radio Anguilla, whose 9-member team wore orange t-shirts, won the competition for the third consecutive year thus securing the championship trophy. Second was the Upbeat Radio whose four-member team wore red t-shirts; and in the third place was the team of two from Kool FM 103.3 in white.

President of the Diabetes Association, Ms. Sherri-Anne Roberts, said Diabetes Night Light was an event involving the lighting of Coronation Park to signify someone who has died of diabetes or is living with the health condition. “We also have the radio stations coming out in their colours, and whichever station has the most persons wearing its colours win the trophy. We do it annually,” she said.
Ms. Roberts continued: “Our week of activities started on Saturday, November 10, when we had a Social Solutions programme on Radio Anguilla. On Sunday, November 11, we worshipped at the Life Impact Centre. On Monday and Tuesday, November 12 and 13, we had the radio addresses of the President of the Association and the Minister of Health. On Wednesday, November 14, were diabetes testimonials at Bethel Methodist Church where many persons were in attendance. Thursday, November 15, was our Night Light where persons came out for a walk in their colours. On Friday, November 16, our activity in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Development was a cook-off at the Anguilla Community College by our young people, living with diabetes, who prepared breakfast and lunch. This was followed by a walk on Saturday morning, November 17, from the Gazebo, on the grounds of the Scouts and Guides Ruthwill Auditorium, to Shoal Bay and back.”

The Diabetes Association President was pleased with the success of the various activities and has offered her thanks and appreciation to all.
