Eight instrumentalists from the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School’s Concert Band left the island on Tuesday June 26th to participate in the acclaimed University of the Virgin Island’s Summer Band Camp in St Thomas, USVI.
Returning for their second tour are clarinetist Tyree Peters, and saxophonists Klein Harrigan and Michael Martin Jr.
Students attending for the first time are trumpeters Solomon Bannister and Carl Thomas Jr., saxophonists Damarai Gumbs and Angelique Rogers, and clarinetist Akira Rogers.
Band Director and music educator, Lennox Vanterpool, commented: “On behalf of the entire Music Department I would like to register a sense of humble pride that is associated with the effort put in over the years by our young musicians. That we are able to easily select another eight students from the school band, to be immersed in this high level training exercise, is testament to the level of tuition to which they are exposed locally.”
Vanterpool also expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the parents of the traveling students and a number of local organizations and individuals who have made handsome contributions in support of this effort.
The Camp covers a wide range of repertoire development, technique drills, private lessons and performance opportunities, all in a supportive , reassuring yet rigorous setting.
The UVI Summer Band Camp ends with a grand concert on July 28th and our students are due back shortly thereafter.
