As part of the follow up to the Anguilla Country Conference 2017, the Organising Committee is conducting a series of community sessions on a number of presentations.

The first in the series is on a paper by Dr. Wycliffe Fahie and Mr. Bren Romney entitled “A Dying Breed or an Emerging Force; the Future of Small Business in Anguilla”. The presentation which sparked much interest and discussion at the Conference last year, is based on research by Fahie, an Economist, and Romney, a Political Scientist. Their paper traces the evolution of small business on Anguilla from 1945 to the present, looking at establishments like C. Rey and Company Limited, Albert Lake, the Evening Star Casino, the Anguillian, Esso Brazil, Flamboyant Supermarket, Caracasbai and the Luna Bar in the context of today’s business environment on Anguilla.

According to the researchers, the aim is to identify the truth about small business on Anguilla, highlighting challenges and opportunities. While nationally, small businesses are an economic growth and development issue, Fahie and Romney note that their paper largely focuses on the micro issue of small business success and or failure, while recognizing the importance of the macro issue of economic growth and development. Their research methodology included direct interviews/questionnaires and the revision of available data in an effort to examine institutional objectives for small business and how they correlate with those of potential or current small business owners in Anguilla.

The general public is invited to attend the presentation and participate in the discussion on Thursday, 19th April from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., downstairs of the Church of God (Holiness) in Pope Hill. According to the researchers, they are eagerly looking forward to the feedback from the general community on this national issue.

The Country Conference is an initiative of the UWI Open Campus and conferences are held in non-campus territories of the University around the region. The conference series and subsequent publications are designed to stimulate and highlight research on the host country. The UWI Open Campus Anguilla partnered with the Anguilla Community College and other stakeholders to present the 2017 Conference as part of the 50th Anguilla Day celebration activities.
