This past weekend saw the premiere of “The Vagina Monologues”, a play directed by Collette Jones-Chin of Senoj Creations and staged as part of the Gender Affairs Women’s Week Celebrations. The turnout for the two-night event was impressive and left many asking for more.

Attendees were blown away by the actresses’ portrayals of the episodic monologues and dialogues. Experiences of women, ranging from promiscuity, self-love, abuse, menopause and sexual expectations, were brought to the stage by the diverse cast which included Bree Theodore, Amethyst Davis, Carlishia Philips, Keneeja Thomas, Christine Dupuis, Vanessa Croft Thompson, and Collette Jones-Chin. Vocal renditions were sung live by sixteen-year-old songstress Charisma Jones-Chin who impressed the packed audience.

“This production raises the bar for theatre in Anguilla,” one attendee said. Another raved that “the potent message and meaning behind every story resonates deep within the fabric of our society”. Dr Dina Foy was quoted on HM Governor’s Office in Anguilla’s official Facebook page, describing the event as “entertaining and heart-breaking in equal measures.”

After deliberation and careful consideration, the cast and crew of “The Vagina Monologues” have announced a hold-over show which will be performed on Friday, 23rd March at 7:00 pm at Magic City. Tickets are available at Jewelry Max in George Hill, Tackle Box and from any cast member.

Due to the content of the play, the audience is restricted to those aged sixteen and older. While the title suggests the truly female-centred subject of the production, the experiences presented can deepen the conversation between men and women on sexual topics. The cast encourages anyone who missed it the first time to catch the next showing.
