Visitors to Anguilla are continuing to openly commend the people of the island for their resilience following Hurricane Irma, and the swift recovery efforts they have demonstrated in the face of much difficulty and expense.
The clean-up campaigns – in the various communities – including the roads, to remove the rubble left behind by the hurricane, are part of the main area of commendation. Old buildings which collapsed during the hurricane and became unsightly spectacles, especially at roadsides, have now removed adding much to the tidiness of the island as an upmarket tourism destination.
Much of the rubble is being disposed of at the convenient dug-out just north of the airport and off the Edwin Wallace Rey Drive at George Hill. The gaping excavation, west of the jet ramp, goes back to the 1980s when marl was used from the area as filling for the reconstruction of the airport runway. Its refilling now expects to restore the area with additional space which may be necessary in any expansion work at the airport.
