Racers Track Club sprinter Zharnel Hughes was held up at gunpoint in an attempted robbery at the University of the West Indies Usain Bolt Track in Mona, St Andrew Tuesday evening as he prepared for a practise session.

Hughes, who represents Great Britain, said he was at his car putting on his sneakers when the armed robber approached him.
“I was putting on my sneakers at my trunk and this guy just came up pointing a gun in my face. He asked me for my phone and I ran off and the guy opened fire,” Hughes said.
It is reported that a licensed firearm holder who was at the venue returned the fire.
No one was injured in the ordeal.
Hughes said he reported the matter to the police.

When contacted, an officer at the Mona police post said she was aware of the shooting but there was no formal report
