December 4-10, the Department of Sports will be highlighting its service to Anguilla. The week of activities have been planned around the theme – A Healthier Happier Anguilla and touch on the various dimensions of sports participation and delivery. The theme encapsulates the vision of what sport can do to contribute to our Anguilla experience. As an arm of the government with specific responsibility for the quality delivery and management of sports on the island, the department has been working diligently to fulfill its mandate.

We take this opportunity to invite all to join us in the planned activities. The week’s activities are geared to give you just a taste of what’s in store for 2018. The intent is to get all of Anguilla moving – towards a healthier, happier and fuller life. The week kicks off on Monday 4th with a public address delivered by our newly installed Director of Sports, Mr. Andre Collins. This address will outline in detail how we intend to achieve our vision for sports and some of the key activities that we will be implementing. On Tuesday, we take the show to the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School where the sport officers will share the importance of staying active through some interactive sessions. Wednesday, we get all of Anguilla into a bit of movement through – Stretch Time, a 5 minute session where you take a break from your work and do some stretching with the rest of Anguilla. At 10:00 am a song will be simultaneously played on the airwaves and you can do a few stretches. Not sure where to begin, if you work at a government office some stretches were emailed to you, and if not visit our Facebook page for a description of a few simple stretches. Later in the afternoon there will be a closed ceremony for the unveiling of the Sports Wall of Fame at the Edison Hughes Public Library.

One of the most anticipated activities for the week will be the Ministry Olympics which takes place on Thursday from 5:30 pm at the Coronation Park. Want to see your favorite public servant show off their sporting prowess, then come down and show your support. Defending champions MICUH has been very busy and hopefully too tired to bring off another victory – or at least that will be the hope of the other ministries. On Friday, the department will be hosting a Sports and Health Fair at its office in The Valley 10:00 am – 2:00 pm culminating in the afternoon with ‘Jam before the Ham’ aerobathon at 4:30 pm.
The department will be partnering with the Anguilla Athletics Association and ACAN for the Anguilla Race against Aids 2017 taking place on Saturday 9th from 7:00 am. If you haven’t registered yet, do so quickly. We’re told that for the first time a relay component will be included so if you can’t or don’t want to run 5ks then get some friends and family to join your team for the relay.

The week’s activities culminate with a church service on Sunday 10th at the Church of God of Holiness from 10:00 am. It really promises to be an exciting and fun packed week so ensure that you don’t miss out. Let’s all begin to work towards a healthier happier Anguilla – you deserve it.

For more information kindly contact the department at 497 5214.
