On Tuesday 25th October, Anguilla Retired Persons Association held an exhibition at The Rodney MacArthur Rey Auditorium in keeping with Older Persons month. The exhibition showcased a number of pieces from locals skilled in painting, crochet, Hardanger embroidery, ceramics and much more. It was open to the general public – to persons who wished to showcase their personal creations.
The exhibition featured work from Mrs. Malesia Carty-Petty, a self-taught artist, who captures Anguilla history in her paintings. She also makes accessories such as Mahogany Tree key chains from the fruit of the tree throughout the island as well as hand-crafted jewelry.
There was work featured by Mrs. Hyacinth Hughes, entitled ‘Sweet River Songs’ which is a collection of poems based on experiences in Anguilla, over the years and more. She is a successful participant in the annual Malliouhana Poetry Competition.
Mrs. Irénée Edwards’ (who specializes in Hardanger embroidery and crochet) display was filled with intricate scenes and images of roosters, household items and the turtle dove. She stated: ‘’No mistake can be made in Hardanger. This is because it will offset the work and therefore one would have to start back from the top.”
Mrs. Geraldine Carty’s (who now knits in her spare time) display was filled with pillows and others items that she quilted – as well as decorations that were knitted.
Mrs. Ilene Richardson, who over the years lived in Canada, has been creating ceramics figures for retail and personal use. She explained the process of molding, painting and then firing the items in a kiln which results in beautiful pieces. Now, back in Anguilla, Mrs. Richardson creates her lovely molds now and again during her spare time.
The exhibition showed skills from individuals who have learnt from their peers locally, and some skills that were picked up abroad over the years. The Anguilla Retired Persons Association is open to all persons over the age of fifty. The organization provides a sense of fellowship for older persons and conducts many activities in the community. Persons wishing to join may collect application forms from various churches throughout the island.
