The Orealia Kelly Primary Schoolwas the place to be last Wednesday evening, May 19th.Anguilla’s future designers, models and art enthusiasts, gave their all for the annual “Art in Motion” showcase. What is”Art in Motion”? This is an annual showcase of the creative work of our primary school visual arts students which is hosted by the Education Department as part of theIsland’s Anguilla Day Commemorative Activities.
Art in Motion was the brainchild of the late Tr. Addonnie Phillips and her legacy lives on through the foundation she has laid in the implementation of the visual arts program and Art in Motion. A moment of silence was observed in respect and remembrance of Tr. Addonie.
The show had five segments: Grade two students ripped the runway in the Papier Couture presentation. Students, along with Tr. Kathyra Smith, the Visual Arts Instructor responsible for Grades one and two in all the primary schools, created fascinating ‘his’ and ‘her’ garments from various types of paper. The little gentlemen strode down the runway in paper bow ties and suspenders, while the cute little ladies strutted in their paper skirts.
Grade four students took to the stage in a presentation entitled, Le parade des Bonnets. Fanciful hats were designed and created by the students under the guidance of Tr. Sherlita Neverson, the Visual Arts Instructor responsible for Grades three and four. The show stopper of this presentation was the elaborately detailed Boat racing top hat. This hat captured the essence of our national sport – Boat racing, with model boats sailing around an elevated representation of our rainbow city.
Grade six students graced the runway in three presentations: Fun prints – a presentation of hand printed Tees and outfits, designed by grade five students; Colour Rhythm – a colourful presentation of tie dyed Tees and outfits, designed by grade six students; and Oh Anguilla! – an ode to our beautiful island, consisting of outfits showcasing the national colours. All the outfits for these segments were designed under the guidance of Tr. Charla Hobson who is the Instructor responsible for Grades five and six.
The show was ably hosted by Dr. Oluwakemi Linda Banks and her daughter, the present Miss Anguilla, Ms. Olufunmike Banks-Devonish.
