UWI Open Campus Celebrates Participants of the 2016 Continuing and Professional Education Programmes

Over one hundred and fifty participants were recognized on Tuesday July 26th, 2016, at the Teachers’ Resource Centre (TRC) for completing various Continuing and Professional Education Programmes delivered by the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Anguilla.

The ceremony was chaired by Manager of UWI Open Campus British Overseas Territories (BOT) Sites, Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks. She welcomed everyone and thanked them for coming out to celebrate with the participants. She said: “The Open Campus is based on the idea that high quality University education, research and services available at our institutions, should be open and available to all people wishing to reach their full potential inside and outside of the Caribbean region”.

The event was also used to highlight all existing Continuing and Professional Development Programmes, as well as, introduce new ones coming on stream for the 2016/1017 period. Those include: Facilities Management, Entrepreneurship & Small Business Management, Information Technology, Information Communication Technology Law, Procurement Management, Occupational Health & Safety and Managing People Effectively.

Mr. Stanford Richardson, a participant in two of the courses spoke of his experience which he highly acclaimed as “Learning is a lifetime process, learning these courses will help us to stay relevant in a changing world.”

The newly elected Executive Members of the Anguilla Chapter of the UWI Open Campus Guild of Students were also introduced. The Guild consists of Chair, Trevor Queeley, who will also serve on the regional Guild of Students along with his regional counterparts; Deputy Chair, Kareen Harrigan; Secretary, Charlene Roach; Treasurer, Soya Ward Williams; Communications/ Public Relations Officer, Tomasha Connor and Liaison Officer, Leonise Francis. Trevor noted that as chair his priority is to ensure students at the Open Campus can feel a part of the UWI community the same as they would at one of the University’s main campuses.

In closing, newly appointed Secretary of the Student Guild, Charlene Roach, shared her personal journey to university and her experience thus far at the Open Campus. She echoed the sentiments of Mr. Stanford Richardson and encouraged everyone to challenge themselves by enrolling in one of the programmes offered at the OWI Open Campus.
