Popular broadcaster at Upbeat Radio, IwandaiGumbs, is on a crusade to care for the environment and beautify Anguilla in the hope that other persons will emulate his example. He has embarked on planting various ornamental and floral plants at some key locations on the island and is demonstrating great care and effort in doing so much to the appreciation and commendation of passersby.

He was at the first intersection at the Edwin Wallace Rey Drive at George Hill (west of the roundabout) a few days ago where The Anguillianmet him. “I am taking care of a few plants I planted here in the interest of the people. The sun is hot but I wanted to water the most recent ones to keep them fresh,” he said. “The plants here include oleander, bougainvillea, crotons and palms. I purchased some, others were donated and I grew some.

“I am just making the area look different. Every now and then the Government used to cut down the corners but then they would grow up again. I thought we can do something better with the corners so I decided not to just speak about it but simply go and do it, and, so here I am. This is a well-travelled area with a lot of tourists coming this way. There is much talk about enhancing the tourism product, and if this can help to beautify the environment and create some ambience, then so be it. I am working on several projects in different corners in this area including the one at Halls’ Bakery and at Rey Hill. I am also doing some work at North Hill and at the Blowing Point corner.

“When I have some time, I just do something in the community. I give my time to the people.”

As The Anguillianwas leaving the George Hill area, Iwandai ran up and patriotically stated:“This programme, I am carrying out, is under the spirit ‘Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.’”
