Anguilla’s celebrated athlete, Shara Proctor, is giving back to her homeland by initiating a fund to benefit the Victrix and Victor Ludorum in the Annual Inter-House Athletic Sports Day Competition of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School.
The fund, which takes immediate effect from this Sports Day, involves the presentation of EC$500 to the Anguilla Amateur Athletic Association to be spent on behalf of each of the two outstanding athletes in the above categories. The money is earmarked for the purchase of training gear or to assist with travel and medical expenses.
Shara’s most welcome fund was announced by Mrs. Tracelyn Hamilton, speaking on behalf of Mrs. Lorna Rogers, President of the Anguilla Amateur Athletic Association.
Mrs. Hamilton, who has a keen interest in athletics, is the Principal of the Adrian T. Hazell Primary School. She made the announcement on behalf of the Amateur Athletic Association. “We would like to thank Ms. Shara Proctor for her kind gesture in giving back to Anguilla’s youth,” she told the gathering at the official opening ceremony of the ALHCS Sports Day on Thursday, March 31, at the Ronald Webster Park.
Shara is Anguillian-born long jumper, competing for Great Britain since 2011. She is the national record holder for both Anguilla and Great Britain. On August 28, 2015, at the World Championships in Beijing, she became the first British female long jumper to jump over 7 meters (7.07), setting a new British record, and earning a World Championship Silver Medal. She also won the 2013 IAAF Diamond League in the event.
