The Valley, Anguilla 30 March 2016: In the recently- held Optimist Oratorical Contest, Miss Nandi Edwards and Mr Aaron Adams emerged victorious from a field of five girls and four boys. Both youngsters, students of Campus B of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School, will now advance to the Optimist International Caribbean District Oratorical Contest slated for Kingston, Jamaica on Saturday 30 April 2016.
Also participating in this year’s keenly contested event were A’Jeanique Joseph, Kyliyah Baird, Tia Gumbs and Abigail Proctor in the girls segment and Kyrleson Lewis, Tajique Connor and Solomon Bannister in the boys segment.
The Oratorical Contest, the second longest running Optimist International programme, is open to students under 18 years of age as of 1st October of the previou
s year. Students are required to prepare a 4- to 5-minutes speech on a pre-assigned topic. The topic presented this year was ‘How my Best Brings Out the Best in Others’. The Oratorical Contest is designed to assist youth in gaining public speaking experience and provides them with an opportunity to compete for a scholarship of up to US$2500, if successful in the District competition.
The Optimist Club of Anguilla takes this opportunity to thank students for their participation and congratulates them all on their outstanding performances. Appreciation is also being extended to the parents and teachers for supporting the children in their preparation. The Club thanks judges Bernard Wattley, Sandra Fahie and Shellecia Brooks-Johnson and chairperson of the event, former Junior Optimist and Oratorical Contest Winner, Arielle Gaskin for their ongoing support of this event and the Club as a whole.
