One of the Literacy targets of the Adrian T Hazell Primary School is the improvement of creative writing. With this set, the school embarked on doing just that with the implementation of a Young Authors Award geared for Grades 3-6. Children are afforded opportunities to write from the different genres. Selected pieces are compiled in a book, where other students are encouraged to do the illustrations. The pieces are compiled and sold across the school where children get to interact by reading and colouring the illustrations making them their own. The first volume was launched on Thursday 3rd March 2016, World Book Day. It comprises of 8 pieces ranging from expository, narrative, descriptive ….
World Book Day also saw the creation of story settings in all classrooms. Some of the depictions came from The Little Red Hen, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Ugly Duckling, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Red Riding Hood…
The highlight of the book launch was the appearance of the Department of Education Literate Lincoln. He distributed the certificates to the young authors and read a few pieces from the book. He was assisted by the Literacy Champion Mrs. Vanessa Hobson, and Curriculum Officer Ms. Sandra Fahie who also received a copy each.
