September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and already the Anguilla Cancer Society, whose President is Mrs. Jennifer Gumbs, is gearing up for the event.
On Wednesday afternoon, this week, the Anguilla Electricity Company (ANGLEC) donated US$9,000, the equivalent of EC$24,120, to help the association to fund a series of activities.
“This year we want to be able to do our regular PSA tests for men; a prostate cancer walk and also to make donations to persons who are affected by prostate cancer towards their medical treatment,” Mrs. Gumbs stated at the presentation ceremony.
She explained that, in terms of men, who may wish to remain private about their prostate cancer, their information and any assistance to them would be handled through their consulting physicians.
Apart from actually looking at prostate cancer cases, the Cancer Society and activities will be focussed on prevention.
Mr. David Gumbs, CEO of ANGLEC, said it was a pleasure for his company to sponsor the prostate cancer initiatives. “It is something that I think many people in Anguilla can personally speak to because they, a family member, or close friend, may have had some effects from prostate cancer,” he stated. “After the sponsorship last year, we know it was a success because people revealed to us how it impacted them so we were very happy with that as the testing actually saved lives. That was very gratifying because there is nothing better than to save lives.”
Meanwhile, Mrs. Gumbs disclosed that the Anguilla Cancer Society would undertake, in due course, to liaise with the recently-established OECS Cancer Centre in Antigua to see how a partnership could be developed between the two organisations.
