H.E. The Governor Celebrates “Unsung Champions of the Hospitality Sector”

gender-001Her Excellency, Governor Christina Scott hosted a special reception at Government House on Wednesday, June 24 to mark the occasion of Men’s Week 2015. In collaboration with The Gender Affairs Unit of the Ministry of Home Affairs, roughly 50 men from all occupational disciplines attended the gathering.

The programme of events was chaired by Kenneth Hodge, Principal Assistant Secretary of Gender. The evening commenced with an Opening Prayer by Men’s Week 2014 honouree, Mr. Michael Fleming followed by remarks by HE Governor Christina Scott and Hon. Chief Minister, Victor Banks. Both officials acknowledged the successes of men in one of Anguilla’s most important industries; hospitality and also applauded the commitment of all men to uplift themselves, their families and their communities. Chief Minister Victor Banks applauded the Gender Affairs Unit for focusing on men in gender affairs in addition to the concerns of women. He noted that it is important for men to feel appreciated for the dedication that they invest into their craft and to the building of society.

Special recognition was given to 15 men honoroued during Men’s Week 2015 under the theme “Unsung Champions of the Hospitality Sector.” The 2015 honourees include Michael “Dumpa” Martin, Steel Pan Musician; Kirk Hughes, Manager of La Vue Boutique Hotel; Phillippe Delaney of Viceroy Anguilla; Pieter Carter of Malliouhana Resort; Kenneth Vanterpool of Ken’s Barbeque; Chef Darren Connor of Sarjai’s Restaurant; Kyle Hodge of Tropical Treats; Wilton Ozaria of Sunset Homes; Josveek Huligar of Anguilla Access; Stedroy Richardson of Anacaona Boutique Hotel; Captain Lyle Connor of GB Ferries; Sgt. Officer Curtis Gumbs of the Anguilla Air and Sea Ports Authority; Athnel Robertson of Sunset Homes; Dennis Mussington of Dennis’ Taxi & Tours; Daryl Ruan of D’s Entertaining Arts.

The men were recognized with a spoken word selection by Keanu Bell which encouraged all men to uplift one another. The evening closed with a reflection and vote of thanks from Delano Mussington, a 2014 Men’s Week honouree, acknowledging HE the Governor and staff, Chief Minister Victor Banks, Principal Assistant Secretary Kenneth Hodge of Gender Affairs, Dr. Ronya Foy Connor, Gender Development Coordinator; Fiona Wilkinson, Gender Focal Point for the Governor’s Office and all of the men in attendance. Participants at the event continued mixing and mingling long after the official programme concluded.
