With regard to the Press Release by Josephine Gumbs-Connor in the March 2 newspaper, it seems very apparent that CM Hubert Hughes chose her as his “legal advisor” because her political views coincided perfectly with his own, as reflected in his ranting over past years.  Indeed one wonders if he had a hand in writing this Press Release since it sounds so much like him.

We have been coming to Anguilla for 25 years, and we are now citizens of this wonderful island.  The one thing we have noticed about Anguillians is that they are happy, friendly and confident, each with a sense of pride and independence.

For Gumbs-Connor  to dwell on past slavery and then to what she now refers to as “subservience to Colonial masters” , which is “imbedded in our psyche” and “nooses around necks” is wholly insulting to the personality and strong character of Aguillians.

One would think that the goal of this Release was to rile up racist attitudes toward what she calls Colonialism by the United Kingdom.  If she and her mentor want independence, why don’t they simply set up a referendum.  Or do they know full well that it will not result in what they seek, and so instead they regale Anguillians with talk about slavery and the purported colonies of the UK.
